$995 (includes two new valves @ $50/ea.). Wow. But it had to be done. Was I ripped off? Maybe.
He also burned a hole in my air conditioning filter while he was soldering. (The A/C sits above the water heater in a closet.) He could have removed it beforehand, or I would have. It's a washable filter (as opposed to single-use) that was there when I moved here over six years ago. So I'll have to buy a new one now, if I can find one. In the meantime, I patched it with tape. Going to Home Depot tomorrow to get a few things for the kitchen--maybe they'll have one.
After he removed the old water heater, I was able to clean and vacuum out the closet. It was full of crap, including a styrofoam cup that's commonly used here for espresso.
I haven't decided whether I'm up or I'll take a nap.
