Did some online research on the Magic Jack and then returned to Radio Shack. I talked to a new, nicer salesperson who was on duty. (He also uses a Magic Jack for international calls.) The bottom line is--a Magic Jack costs $39.99 and comes with a year's free phone service. So I went ahead and bought it. I'd thought that since I was just replacing my old device and not interested in the free year, the device alone would cost less. Not the case.
I'm not losing anything in this deal. I'd already got one year of free calls, included in the original $39.99 purchase. (I recently paid $19.99 for an additional year of the service.)
Back home, as instructed earlier by the tech chat people, I went back to the chat and got step-by-step instructions to assign my old Magic Jack phone number to the new Magic Jack. It's working now. I swear I'll keep it off the floor.
Used Magic Jack later for a long conversation with my friend in Ft. Lauderdale/St. Louis (the guy who had the paralyzed dog, who is doing well--better than his BF, who has schizophrenia and is reportedly doing worse).
